I truly love a great hamburger!  Hey, who doesn’t?  Not the type that fast-food restaurants mass-produce…. but hamburgers that are made lovingly without all sorts of nasties like preservatives and transfats.

Oh, the joy of all the beautiful textures, colors, and tastes that are all embraced by a fresh sesame seed bun!

In my version of a bacon and avo burger, I chose to substitute the avo with another favorite of mine: guacamole.  I would have loved to add a little bit of chili to my guacamole but refrained from doing so as I have small children who do not appreciate it when mom’s food set their mouths on fire.  Of course, you can feel free to turn up the heat by adding a little or a lot…..  Also, feel free to add a slice of cheese if you want, the choice is all yours!

To make this perfect ensemble a little more healthy I just lightly drizzled some potato wedges with olive oil and roasted them in the same oven pan I used to roast the hamburger patties.  No deep-fried chips!  Thus, you save on dishes and calories!  So what is not to like about this?  This serves 4 to 6,  depending on the size of your patties.


Hamburger Patties

  1. 600g  minced beef (extra low in fat)
  2. 1/2  a small onion chopped finely
  3. 1/2  teaspoon of cloves
  4. 1  teaspoon of coriander
  5. 1  teaspoon of  paprika
  6. 1/2  cup of bread crumbs
  7. 1  egg lightly beaten
  8. 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  9. 2  teaspoons of  Worcestershire sauce


  1. 1  large avo
  2. juice of one lemon or lime
  3. few stalks of coriander (not too much as the taste can be overpowering, I used about 3 stalks)
  4. freshly ground salt and pepper to taste
  5. 1  small red sweet pepper finely chopped
  6. 1 small chili deseeded and finely chopped (optional)

potato wedges

  1. 5 to 6 medium size potatoes, cut into wedges
  2. olive oil to drizzle over
  3. freshly ground sea salt and pepper

You will also need

  1. fresh sesame seed  hamburger buns, cut open
  2. slices of tomatoes
  3. crisp fresh lettuce
  4. sweet and sour gherkins (optional but lovely to add)
  5. cheddar cheese slices (also optional but nice)
  6. 250g  low fat bacon (or if you want to go all the way, use back bacon), pan-fried in a little olive oil.


  1. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees celsius.
  2. Place all ingredients for the patties together in a mixing bowl and mix well.
  3. Take medium-sized balls of the mixture and bring it together in your hand. Press down lightly into a flat round shape.
  4. Brush a roasting pan with olive oil and place patties in.
  5. Roast the patties for about  1/2 hour or until cooked.  Do not overroast as this will make them tough.

In the meantime prepare the guacamole.

  1. Using a stick blender mash together the avo, lemon (or lime juice) with the coriander leaves
  2. Stir in the chopped sweet red pepper, chili (if you are using), salt and pepper

Remove the patties when done and keep warm.  Add your potato wedges to the same pan used for the patties and drizzle very lightly with olive oil.  Add salt and pepper.  Stir the wedges around in the pan to be properly coated with the pan juices.  Roast until soft and golden brown.

Pan-fry the bacon in a little olive oil.

Assemble burgers and enjoy!
